GetFlix is a smart DNS proxy service that made its debut heralding a fast and cheap means to watch Netflix. That didn’t last long, and now the company is stuck with an embarrassing name that brings up painful reminders of when its users were blocked a few months later.

HideIPVPN has previously mentioned that neither its VPN nor its smart DNS proxy service would continue to work with Netflix. “[…] as stated in our ToS we cannot guarantee that you will be able to access specific websites or services. For now, that is the case with Netflix. ”

Why does Netflix block most VPNs? Netflix views VPNs as a means of bypassing geographic licensing restrictions, meaning VPN users who use a VPN for other reasons are caught in the cross-fire. If it openly allows users to view a TV show in a country where it doesn’t have the rights to stream it, then it would be in breach of those licensing restrictions. However, Netflix doesn’t distinguish between users who live in other countries and those that are just visiting and want to access their home streaming services, or between people who are abroad and those who just want to use a VPN for privacy and do we advocate for using a VPN with Netflix? A VPN is not simply a proxy tool to fool apps and websites into thinking the user is somewhere they are not. VPNs are in everyone’s best interest when it comes to privacy. Netflix’s VPN ban is a blunt instrument put in place to appease copyright holders. It blocks VPN users no matter where they are located so long as a proxy is detected. This is not a fair policy to paying subscribers. Forcing users to turn off their VPNs could sacrifice privacy, especially those connected on unsecured public wi-fi networks or traveling abroad to surveillance-heavy countries.
You have the right to use the VPN, and Netflix should respect that right by not forcing users to choose between privacy and entertainment. I’m traveling and want to access US Netflix Abroad, which countries will these VPNs work in? The VPN services listed should allow you to access US Netflix in any country you might be traveling to, other than those where media is censored and VPNs are actively blocked by a firewall such as China (see our list of the VPNs working in China and pick one that works there, too).

Can I access Netflix libraries from countries other than the US with a VPN? A VPN that works with US Netflix won’t necessarily be work with Netflix catalogs of other countries. While the US version of Netflix is highest in demand by far, we’ve also made up lists of the best VPNs for a few other popular countries:
Is accessing the Netflix app with a VPN the same as watching Netflix in a web browser? Accessing the Netflix native app, such as the Netflix app for Android and iOS, is a little more challenging for VPNs than working with it in a web browser like Chrome or Firefox. Netflix can sometimes override the VPN’s DNS servers and send requests to your nearest public DNS server. That means Netflix can determine your true location and block you accordingly, even with a VPN.
All of the VPNs we recommend have overcome this hurdle, however, so it shouldn’t be a do I watch Netflix on a device that doesn’t support my VPN app like Roku, Chromecast, smart TV, Apple TV, PS4, or XBox? If you want to watch Netflix with a VPN but your device doesn’t support any VPN apps, then you’ll have to route that device’s internet traffic through a router and configure the VPN on that router. This process varies depending on your router’s firmware, and you might have to flash new firmware onto the router that supports VPNs, such as TomatoUSB or DD-WRT. Check with your VPN provider for router setup instructions.
If you don’t feel comfortable configuring a VPN on your wi-fi router, then consider buying a pre-configured router like those available from ExpressVPN.
Another alternative is to use a laptop to create a VPN-enabled virtual router. This can be done on either Mac or Windows.
Lastly, if you have a device that supports screencasting such as a Chromecast or Apple TV, you can connect to the VPN on a device that supports VPN apps and stream video from the Netflix I watch Netflix using a smart DNS proxy? If it detects a DNS request for Netflix, it sends all the browser web traffic for that request through the server to an American Netflix server, thereby changing both your public IP address and DNS server.
This approach worked for a few months until it caught the attention of Netflix, and a subsequent crackdown blocked most smart DNS proxy users. Today, a handful of smart DNS proxy services still work with Netflix, but the only one that’s consistently worked for us is ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer service. MediaStreamer is a smart DNS proxy service that comes with every ExpressVPN subscription. It’s used by default when you connect to the VPN, or you can set it up separately so that it’s used on its it legal to use a VPN with Netflix? Yes. However, using a VPN to access another country’s Netflix library is against the company’s terms of use, which state:
“You may view Netflix content primarily within the country in which you have established your account and only in geographic locations where we offer our service and have licensed such content. The content that may be available to watch will vary by geographic location and will change from time to time. ”
Although Netflix does what it can to enforce this rule by blocking internet connections from most VPN providers, it does not penalize users who attempt to watch through a VPN. We’ve not witnessed Netflix banning, suspending, or taking legal action against VPN users beyond simply blocking Free VPN Works With Netflix? Netflix VPN ban: What the VPN providers say
To find out more about their ongoing fight, we spoke to executives from NordVPN, Buffered, VyprVPN, ExpressVPN, and LiquidVPN for some insight from the front lines.

Morgan says Netflix probably isn’t targeting isolated VPN providers. He believes a combination of techniques is used to block them. One of those techniques, says LiquidVPN CEO Dave Cox, is by identifying connections coming from data centers instead of residences. He goes on to explain that the Netflix apps combat SmartDNS services by forcing you to use a public DNS server and frequently change the URLs that do geolocation for their content. This makes it impossible for services that could support thousands of customers streaming at a time by only forwarding the geolocation packets through their servers.
Buffered CEO Jordan Fried suspects Netflix could put the final nail in the VPN coffin if it truly wished to do so. Instead, it has resisted avoiding losing more customers. The argument against a billing address-based filtering scheme, Netflix might argue, is that the copyright licensing restrictions apply to where content is being watched from, not where the subscriber’s money comes from.
Since this article was first published we’ve seen reports from other VPNs of Netflix blocking residential IP addresses in the streaming giant’s latest round of measures targeting VPNs.
It’s not just Netflix. Hulu, BBC iPlayer, HBO Now, and several other types of streaming providers have all implemented VPN bans at some level. Why does Netflix ban VPNs and proxies?
When Netflix went global a couple years back, it didn’t have all the licensing rights necessary to stream all of the same TV series and movies to every country. Even before the worldwide rollout, users connected to Virtual Private Networks and other types of proxies to access other countries’ Netflix libraries. The US Netflix library is particularly popular due to its larger and generally newer catalog of TV shows.
A proxy service acts as a middleman between your device and Netflix. Instead of communicating directly with Netflix, internet data is first routed through the proxy server. How does the Netflix proxy error work?
Netflix doesn’t publicly disclose how the VPN ban and proxy error work, but through our extensive testing, we can surmise a few things.
Blacklisting IPs
An IP address is a unique string of numbers and decimals assigned to every internet-connected device. Public IP addresses are visible on the web and correspond to specific countries. Whenever you connect to a VPN or proxy service, your device’s public IP address is masked by that of the proxy server.
Netflix blacklists most proxy and VPN server IP addresses. Rather than weeding out individual servers, we believe Netflix simply blocks entire ranges of non-residential IP addresses. Netflix knows most proxy servers are hosted in data centers, which use different ranges of IP addresses than residential networks.
DNS filtering
Netflix can also detect when some VPNs and proxies are being used through DNS. Short for Domain Name System, DNS works like a phone book for the internet that associates IP addresses with domain names.
Whenever you go to the Netflix website, for instance, your web browser sends a DNS request to a DNS server. The DNS server looks up the IP address for Netflix and returns it to your device, which then fetches the video from the Netflix server. Netflix can determine which DNS server was used in this transaction.
By default, your DNS server probably belongs to your local Internet Service Provider and corresponds to a specific country or region. Many proxies and VPNs only route web traffic and not DNS traffic. If Netflix spots a mismatch between your DNS server location and your IP address location, it knows a proxy service is in use and throws the error.
Most good VPN providers route DNS traffic along with everything else through their servers, but the Netflix apps for iOS and Android compound the issue by overriding these DNS settings. The website version that you access in a web browser doesn’t do this, though, so accessing Netflix in a browser is typically easier than on the mobile apps.
Why Netflix bans VPNs
Netflix cracked down hard on VPN and smart DNS proxy providers after its global rollout. Despite its efforts, a handful of VPN providers persevered and still provide access Netflix today.
The ban on VPNs does not take into account the fact that these tools are used widely as a means of protecting privacy and allow those traveling aborad to securely access services from home.
Despite the ban, VPNs and smart DNS proxies remain the easiest and most popular means to access Netflix abroad. We’ll explain how each can resolve the proxy error.
How do VPNs work with Netflix
As mentioned above, a VPN encrypts a device’s internet traffic and routes it through a middleman server in a location of the user’s choosing. By connecting to a VPN in the US, you can access the internet as if you were physically located in the US.
For the average Netflix user, a VPN comes in the form of a desktop or mobile app and usually requires a small monthly fee.
Most VPNs that can reliably access Netflix don’t share how they do so. Again, however, we can surmise how they manage to do it.
Because Netflix blacklists most data center IP addresses, VPN providers set up a handful of servers that use residential IP addresses. These IPs are off Netflix’s radar, and blocking them could result in some non-proxy users being unable to access videos. If Netflix happens to block a residential IP anyway, the VPN provider simply swaps it out with the next one in line.
A few VPNs have also managed to force the Netflix app to use the VPN provider’s DNS servers instead of local ones. All of this ensures Netflix cannot determine whether the user is accessing videos through a VPN.
Smart DNS proxy
A smart DNS proxy is a clever way to only use a proxy on an as-needed basis for certain websites, apps, and services. It is usually configured in the DNS settings of your device’s network settings menu. Like VPNs, DNS proxies often require a monthly subscription.
We mentioned before that DNS works like a phone book for the internet. Smart DNS alters entries in the phone book for specific domains like “” Instead of Netflix’s IP address, a request for on a smart DNS proxy sends your traffic to a proxy server in the US (or the location you want to access).
These proxy servers likely use residential IP addresses in lieu of commercial data center IP addresses so as to avoid Netflix’s firewall, similar to some VPNs. Unlike VPNs, however, your internet traffic is not necessarily encrypted, so you don’t get the same level of privacy or security. They are useful, however, on Smart TVs when no VPN app is available.
Combining smart DNS and VPNs
Most VPN providers that can access Netflix only operate a small handful of servers that can do so. This means users have to look up or ask customer service which server or location to connect to. To get around this, some providers combine a VPN with smart DNS to let users use Netflix regardless of which server they’re connected to.
For example, when you connect to any NordVPN server through a VPN, you use NordVPN’s DNS servers. Those are smart DNS servers that, in most cases, will route requests to Netflix back to the US version, regardless of actual server location. This allows NordVPN users to access Netflix USA from any server location, although they might not get the localized version they’re expecting. In this case, even though you’re connected to a server in, say, Mexico, your connections to Netflix still run through US servers.
Some VPN providers like ExpressVPN allow you to use smart DNS either with the VPN or as a standalone service.

Netflix Proxy Error FAQ
Does Netflix work with split tunneling on my router? It may be that you’d prefer to use a direct connection with Netflix in order to enjoy the best possible speed. In order to do this, you’ll need to choose a VPN that allows split tunneling and is also compatible with routers. Is it illegal to use a VPN for Netflix? | Will you get banned? – ProPrivacy

Before you unblock Netflix it can help to understand where you stand legally. This guide takes a look at using Netflix VPNs to access additional content both in the eyes of Netflix and the law. Will I get in trouble if use a VPN with Netflix? Legally, no. People commonly mistake using a VPN with Netflix as a form of piracy, but accessing the provider’s international catalogs is quite different from torrenting copyrighted material. It is not illegal in any way, shape or form, and will not currently result in a criminal or civil lawsuit anywhere in the world. Technically, it is against the platform’s terms of service and Netflix does retain the right to cut access at any point, but it has not once enforced these rules. Let’s look at the Terms of Use The relevant sections of Netflix’s Terms of Use are: You may view Netflix content primarily within the country in which you have established your account and only in geographic locations where we offer our service and have licensed such content. The content that may be available to watch will vary by geographic location and will change from time to time. Netflix ToS 4. 3 You also agree not to circumvent, remove, alter, deactivate, degrade or thwart any of the content protections in the Netflix service; use any robot, spider, scraper or other automated means to access the Netflix service… We may terminate or restrict your use of our service if you violate these Terms of Use or are engaged in illegal or fraudulent use of the service. 6 This means that, technically, Netflix can terminate your contract for using a VPN to circumvent its geographic restrictions on content. But it has never done this and has shown no interest whatsoever in doing so. The following tidbit from Netflix’s help section may also be of interest: Do you use a VPN or proxy for other reasons, such as for work or for privacy? Because there is no reliable way for us to determine if a VPN or proxy is being used for legitimate purposes, any VPN or proxy use will prevent you from streaming Netflix. If you are “caught” using a VPN, Netflix will show a streaming error message and refuse to play titles. These content creators typically strike lucrative deals with regional broadcasters and streaming services around the world, who tend to insist on the exclusive right to broadcast that content in their country. If a US production company sells the BBC exclusive rights to broadcast its TV show in the UK, then part of the deal will be that no other UK broadcaster can make that show available in the UK. Including Netflix. It is up to third party distributors how and when they license their product, not Netflix, as the streaming service is simply another one of their customers. As part of its contractual obligations to the third party creators it licenses content from, Netflix has agreed to take measures preventing people using from VPNs to watch content on its platform that it is not licensed to show in their country. A reluctant policeman It should be noted that Netflix has always been notoriously unenthusiastic about enforcing regional restrictions. As it said in January 2016: We are making progress in licensing content across the world and, as of last week…, but we have a ways to go before we can offer people the same films and TV series everywhere. Over time, we anticipate being able to do so… We look forward to offering all of our content everywhere and to consumers being able to enjoy all of Netflix without using a proxy. That’s the goal we will keep pushing towards. Netflix As a result, it was relatively late in the game, and it was only under considerable pressure from its licensed content creators that it started blocking VPN users in 2016: For now, given the historic practice of licensing content by geographic territories, the TV shows and movies we offer differ, to varying degrees, by territory.
