Edge Browser is a web browser developed by Microsoft and included in Windows 10, replacing Internet Explorer as the default web browser on all device types. It was first released on July 29, 2015, for Windows 10 and Xbox One. Edge includes integration with Cortana and has extensions hosted on the Microsoft Store.
Edge is built on the Chromium open source project, running on the same Blink engine used by Google’s Chrome browser. According to Microsoft, Edge is designed to be a simpler and more secure browser, offering features such as advanced tab and browsing management features, intelligent tracking prevention, and a built-in password manager. Edge also has the advantage of being the first browser to offer full integration with the Windows Hello biometric authentication system.
As of June 2018, Edge had about four percent global market share, compared to Google Chrome’s 68%. Despite this, its market share has been slowly increasing, and Microsoft has announced plans to make Edge the default browser in Windows 10 in late 2019.
