Network, in computing, refers to a group of two or more computers or devices interconnected for the purpose of communication and resource sharing. Networks can range from small, private home networks to large, public corporate networks. They are used for a variety of purposes, such as data and file sharing, remote access, internet access, and multimedia streaming.
Networks are composed of several components, including a server, (or multiple servers in a larger network) used to store and access data and applications, a client (or multiple clients in a larger network) used to access the server and resources, and the communication links between the components. The most common type of network is a Local Area Network or LAN, which connects two or more computers in close physical proximity such as a single building or home. Wireless networks, or WANs, connect multiple LANs across vast distances.
Networks can be secured by varying levels of authentication, encryption, and other security measures. Unsecured networks are often referred to as “public” networks because their lack of security makes them accessible to anyone with network-enabled devices.
Network administration is the process of maintaining networks, including installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and managing hardware and software. Network administrators may also be responsible for maintaining network security, setting up user accounts, performing system backups, and monitoring network performance.
Network technologies and protocols, such as Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and WAP, are the backbone of the Internet and its applications today. End-user devices such as computers, tablets, and mobile phones all rely on these technologies and protocols to communicate with each other.
