QR Code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is a 2D matrix barcode that stores data. It was developed in the early 2000s by Japanese company Denso Wave with the purpose of tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing. Today, QR Codes have become incredibly popular in the digital world and are often used for encoding alphanumeric information, such as website URLs, for sharing on the internet.
A QR Code consists of square block modules, arranged in a square grid pattern on a white background, and typically contains some statistical error correction. QR Codes are read by a cell phone with a camera using a special app. Once scanned, the app translates the code into a class of machine-readable information, such as web address or text.
