Script kiddie

Script kiddie is a derogatory term used to describe a person who uses existing computer scripts, programs, or malware, often downloaded from the Internet, without fully understanding the underlying concepts. Script kiddies typically lack the technical skills to create new programs, scripts, or malware.

The term “script kiddie” originated in the 1990s in underground hacker circles, and is considered a pejorative. Typically, script kiddies are young adolescents who lack the ability and skillset to program, but possess just enough computer knowledge to download malware, run malware, or execute existing scripts without understanding them. Due to lack of technical skill they are more focused on intent than on the underlying mechanism, often using tools that are out of date or no longer effective.

Script kiddies may be predominantly motivated by the attraction of fame or recognition or they may simply be curious about how things work. Script kiddies typically do not have malicious or criminal intent, but can and do cause serious damage to computer systems.

By downloading and using malware scripts, script kiddies can cause a wide range of harm, including disrupting the functionality of computer systems, gathering passwords and personal information, and causing intentional or unintentional data loss. Script kiddies are also vulnerable to prosecution, as they may be charged for malicious activity, depending on the jurisdiction.

In order to discourage script kiddie activities, software companies, software vendors, and consumers should take steps to protect their networks and systems, including employing up-to-date firewalls and antivirus software, maintaining strong passwords, and regularly monitoring system activity.
