Botnet, a portmanteau of the words “robot” and “network”, is a term used to describe a network of computers connected together to communicate or run procedural tasks. Botnets can be used for a variety of purposes, including malicious activities such as denial of service (DoS) attacks, spamming, and malware distribution.
Botnets are created when a large number of computers are infected with malicious software, often via malicious links on the Internet or through unprotected Wi-Fi networks. This malicious software can be a virus, a Trojan Horse, or other forms of malware. Once the malicious software is installed, it will connect the computers together and give the attackers control over the machines that make up the botnet.
The attackers can then use the botnet to send out spam, launch DoS or DDoS attacks, and distribute malware. Additionally, attackers can steal data, infect more computers, or even use the botnet to create virtual private networks (VPNs) for anonymity.
Because of the sheer size of most botnets, they can be difficult to detect and shut down. In addition to running anti-virus and anti-malware software, users should be vigilant about their online activities and protect their data with strong passwords and two-factor authentication tools. Additionally, users should ensure their routers and other internet-connected devices, such as smartphones and tablets, are running the latest firmware.
