Domain Name System (DNS)

The Domain Name System (DNS) is an important part of the Internet infrastructure that translates domain names into numerical IP addresses. This is essential for many computer applications, including the World Wide Web, to function properly. DNS is an acronym for Domain Name System.

DNS servers are responsible for mapping domain names to the IP addresses of web hosting servers. When a user types in a domain name, a DNS server is the first point of contact for the browser, and it provides the IP address that allows the browser to connect to a web server and retrieve the page requested by the user.

The DNS is also used for the email protocol, which allows users to send messages by typing in the domain name of the recipient. DNS servers are responsible for translating the domain name of the recipient into the IP address of the mail server responsible for delivering the message.

DNS works in a hierarchical system which consists of servers arranged hierarchically in different levels, starting with the Root or Top-level Domain (TLD) servers. Each server stores information about the domain name associated with it, and the information is handed down in a hierarchical manner. This allows clients to query the IP address of the domain name they are looking for from any DNS server.

The development of the DNS system began in the 1980s and was designed by Paul Mockapetris in 1983. The DNS system was implemented as part of the internet infrastructure in the late 1980s and its use was mandated in 1990.

The DNS system is an integral part of the internet infrastructure and is responsible for providing the essential link that allows clients to access web pages, emails, and other services. Without a reliable and robust DNS system, the Internet depending on domain names would suffer greatly.
