NoSQL (also known as “Not Only SQL”) is an umbrella term for a set of database technologies that are used to store and manage data that is typically held in a relational database. Unlike SQL databases, which use structured query language (SQL), NoSQL databases use alternative formats such as key-value stores, document-oriented databases, graph databases, and wide-column stores.
NoSQL databases offer a number of advantages over traditional SQL databases, such as scalability, flexibility, and lower costs. NoSQL databases are also known as schema-free databases, meaning that they do not require an explicit and rigid predefined schema. Instead, data can be stored and retrieved in a format that is most suitable for the task to be performed.
NoSQL databases are commonly used in distributed systems that must be able to handle large amounts of data, such as mobile applications or web applications with many users. They are also used in situations where data must be stored in different formats, such as images or other multimedia types, as well as for data that is continually changing and needs to be updated quickly.
NoSQL databases are not suitable for all types of tasks. For complex queries and complex data models, traditional SQL databases are often better suited due to their rigidly enforced data schema and more sophisticated query language.
