PAN (Personal Area Network) is a type of computer network which is typically used to interconnect devices within an individual’s reach. This type of network offers an individual a sufficient level of connectivity to support a variety of applications and activities.
Unlike a standard Local Area Network (LAN), a PAN is usually smaller in diameter – being used to link up two to five devices within a very small space. These devices, such as laptop computers, mobile phones, tablets and Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) hardware, can be easily connected to a PAN as the technology uses wireless or wired connections (e.g. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or infrared) to establish the network.
As PANs are commonly used only in the close vicinity of the user, the security level provided is very high, providing an appropriate barrier against external threats that could affect the exchanged information. Furthermore, it provides the user with the capability to monitor and control these devices whenever needed.
The potential applications of PANs have been expanded along with the arrival of new technology such as the development of the ZigBee protocol. With this advancement PANs have seen an increased use in commercial and industrial applications, most notably in building automation systems, medical monitoring, and consumer electronics applications. With the further development of cloud computing technologies, PANs are also being increasingly incorporated into enterprise IT solutions, allowing for easier in-field service execution and maintenance.
Overall, Personal Area Networks are beneficial because they provide a secure and practical solution to linking personal devices within a limited area, allowing remote access with a minimum of fuss.
