Mouse

Mouse is a pointing device typically used in graphical user interfaces to interact with computers. It senses two-dimensional motion related to a desktop surface. This motion is typically translated into the motion of a pointer on the display, which allows a smooth control of the graphical user interface. The earliest known mouse was released in 1968 by Douglas Engelbart and was used in the original development of the Graphical User Interface.

The mouse typically includes two buttons, a left and a right button, which are used to manipulate objects on the user interface. Additional buttons may be used to control different functions depending on the software being used. A scroll wheel is also typically present between the two buttons, and has been used to scroll through webpages or documents on the screen. Other forms of the mouse exist, including those designed for gaming, ergonomic models, or special functions.

In modern operating systems such as Windows and Mac OS, the mouse can be used to open programs, move and select text, execute shortcuts, resize, rotate, and move objects around a window. In some cases, such as in certain video games, the mouse is the only input device used to control how the character moves in the game.

The mouse has become an integral input device in a modern computer environment, allowing users to interact with their systems in a more dynamic, intuitive way. As technology advances, the mouse design is likely to see further advancements, such as the introduction of gesture based control, increased sensitivity, and even 3D interfaces.
