Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-simulated reality, a three-dimensional environment in which users interact with computer generated objects and environments. The technology produces a realistic experience of a virtual world by use of a head-mounted display (HMD), a glove or other haptic devices, audio technology, and visual cues such as lighting and touch-simulated surfaces.

VR is often used for gaming, educational and other interactive training exercises, and it can also be used for viewing 3D images or scenes from an entirely different perspective. It has also been used for physical therapy and to, for example, help paraplegics learn to walk again.

In addition to gaming and training, VR can be used for film, art, and interactive media. The term “virtual reality” was first used in 1987 by Jaron Lanier, one of the earliest innovators in this technology. Since then, the technology has evolved to the point where some developers are looking to bridge the gap between physical and virtual realities, augmenting people’s daily activities with virtual assets.

VR has been used in military applications, medical simulations, automotive design, and scientific visualizations. The use of this technology has been controversial, as some feel that it could be used in a way that manipulates people’s behavior. In addition, it is said to have potential for psychological stress and addiction.

In its present state, VR requires considerable computing power and it can be expensive to use. However, with advances in software and hardware developers, such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, VR is more accessible than ever, allowing anyone with the right equipment to experience virtual reality.
